How the PSAT/NMSQT Works

The PSAT/NMSQT is the digital practice test for the SAT, taken in school in the fall. It has the same two sections as the SAT and takes 2 hours and 14 minutes.

  • Reading and Writing: 54 questions in 64 minutes
  • Math: 44 questions in 70 minutes
  • Total: 98 questions
  • Scores: 320–1520, with 160–760 for each section
  • National Merit: juniors also receive a Selection Index (48–228), which the National Merit Scholarship Corporation uses for its scholarship program

PSAT Prep FAQ

Why prepare for the PSAT?

For juniors, the PSAT/NMSQT is the qualifying test for National Merit recognition. For every student, it is a low-stakes way to practice for the SAT and find weak areas early.

When should my student start?

Many students prepare in the summer before or early fall of 10th or 11th grade, so they are ready for the October test date at their school.
