The Guidance

The questions

What do we want students to be able to know, do, and appreciate and how do we know that students are achieving the intended learning outcomes? After implementing an assessment plan and measuring student learning outcomes, departments, programs, and units need to analyze the results obtained and use those results to make necessary changes or improvements to the unit or program.

Mega College Prep

The Assessment

Our goal

Provide (1) a clear plan for intended outcomes, (2) a description of how these outcomes are assessed and measured, (3) a description of the results obtained from these measures, and (4) a description of how these results validate current practices or point to changes needed to improve student learning.

How the ACT Works

The ACT has three core sections: English, math and reading. Science and writing are optional. The core test takes 2 hours and 5 minutes, or 2 hours and 45 minutes with science.

  • English: 50 questions in 35 minutes
  • Math: 45 questions in 50 minutes
  • Reading: 36 questions in 40 minutes
  • Science (optional): 40 questions in 40 minutes
  • Writing (optional): one essay in 40 minutes
  • Scores: the composite score ranges from 1 to 36

Because science is now optional, it pays to check which sections the colleges on your student’s list want before test day.

ACT Prep FAQ

Should my student take the science section?

It depends on the colleges your student is applying to. Some programs, especially in STEM, may want to see a science score. We help families check requirements and decide.

Should my student take the ACT or the SAT?

Colleges that require a test score accept either one. A practice test of each is the best way to see which format suits your student, and we can help you compare the results.

When should my student start ACT prep?

Many students start in 10th grade or early 11th grade. That leaves time to take the ACT more than once before college application deadlines.
